This project was for the development of a Electronic taxi meter for a well known manufacturer of Mechanical taxi meters. The unit provides various fares tables used for in city, out side city limits, day time or night time fares, calculating waiting time according to complex rules, Keeping eprom based totalisers for all the parameters like total distance covered, paid distance, total waiting time, total extras collected, total fare collected etc. Finally complying to the countries weights and measures standards and even assisting to get the unit certified by the certifying body.
Prior to any design work being performed a complete analysis of existing meters and their problems was performed to evaluate all potential single points of failure. This allowed all involved to focus on any areas that needed special attention during the design process.
The design technology work performed included development of a complete board including all the I/O to control the displays as well as the user interface buttons, plus a expansion capability to attach various add on units like a GPS unit (developed by us), GSM modem, Credit card reader, Driver smart card reader, Printer and RS 232 port for download.
Once the schematics were designed two distinct process were started one the PCB design for the final product and simultaneously the software was written and tested by emulation. Bills of material was produced and the sourcing process was initiated. We also worked closely with the clients manufacturing outfit to bring them up to speed using the prototype units thereby getting the manufacturing team experienced before the final product was ready.
Software design technology for the project was performed to the module level and the code produced in C. Once produced, the software was formally tested verified and then submitted to the certification body.
The finished product came in well underneath is production cost target and currently is not only being locally sold but is now being exported too..
