The project was for the development of a Vehicle tracking unit for a large industrial house where 150,000 vehicles had to be tracked country wide. The requirement was for a web interface with maps showing the vehicles and the relevant information about each like speed, location etc. A interface to the existing SAP system was also required and the location information was to be returned to the base station by SMS using local GSM operators. A prime requirement was to lower the operating cost of the whole system.
Our teams looked at existing implementations of similar systems and found the response times too slow and the costs of SMS messages high. Our engineers solved the first problem using innovative methods to create the desired map on the fly drawing on their experience in the Graphic arts field and specialist web programming knowledge a bonus that this solution brought was that it needed only one machine to serve as the WEB server, Application server, GIS server and Database server where as contemporary solutions needed four dedicated machines one for each task. In fact the system was demonstrated using space on a shared hosting service. The second problem was solved using a compression technique to compress a number of location points with the respective time stamps in one SMS message thus reducing the number of SMS messages drastically. Alternative methods of data communication (WAP, GPRS) were built into the system thus future proofing the system as Telecom tariff structures change very rapidly and the cheapest one can be used.
Four design teams worked simultaneously on this project i.e the in-vehicle hardware unit design team, The embedded software team, the web programming team and the team that did the maps.
